Thomas Briggs

Tom Briggs is an author, sailor, and veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. He became an author by accident, through writing for his own pleasure. Encouraged by his wife, he completed his second novel in 2024: Private Man of War.
Briggs was first drawn to sailing and tall ships during a visit to the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City. He joined the crew of the 1885 schooner Pioneer and learned sailing and seamanship on New York Harbor. He has since sailed as captain and crew on his own and other people’s vessels off the coast of Florida, the Chesapeake Bay, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. He obtained his USCG license as master of vessels under fifty tons on inland waters in order to skipper a Chesapeake Bay skipjack.
His professional career has involved working in institutions of higher education, premier entertainment facilities and the military intelligence community. He is currently employed by Virginia Commonwealth University, though he’s had a thirty-year career at institutions such as the University of Central Florida, the City University of New York, Madison Square Garden, and the American Museum of Natural History.
Briggs enlisted in the Navy Reserve in 2005. He was deployed to Iraq in 2008 with NMCB Three and again to Afghanistan in 2010-11 with SEAL Team Four. He was commissioned as a Chief Warrant Officer in 2019 and deployed to Bahrain in 2024. Of note, he retired from the US Navy Reserve as a Chief Warrant Officer having never served on a naval vessel.

Private Man of War

Set in the Caribbean during the Seven Years War, the story follows the return of Lieutenant Robert Marshal from the war in the north. Suffering from his experience, Robert has withdrawn from friends, family and the sea. Redemption comes through the efforts his former crew and he goes to sea again, though this time as a privateer for profit, rather than patriotism. Sailing the Caribbean from the Leeward to the Windward Islands, Robert and his crew battle the French, storms at sea and disease to gain the prize money as their due.
Told from three perspectives, the British, the French and the free-Black population of the British colonies; the story follows Robert, a French privateer and one of the last free-Black families of obeah on Antigua. When a British fleet unexpectedly comes to the Leeward Islands to oppose the French, Robert and his ship are forced to assist in the invasion of Martinique and Guadeloupe.
Baptiste Guyot Du Clos, a former French naval officer also turned privateer, is part of the defense of the islands. As the armies face each other on the islands, the fleets move between them, seeking the weather gauge and advantage. Ultimately, alone and outnumbered, Robert and his crew face Baptiste and other French privateers in the final fight for the French islands.
